Τsarouchi is a type of shoe, known nowadays as part of the traditional uniform worn by the Evzones of the Greek Presidential Guard. Its origin is obscure and goes back to the Byzantine times. Under the shoe there was either metal or nails, its color was red and the fluffy ball at the shoe’s nose was black.
It is a symbol of bravery, courage, and freedom, as it was worn by the Greek soldiers that were fighting for Greek independence from the Turks in the early 19th century.
